BRENDON BOUNDS 800-METER RUN STATE CHAMPION

Everyone in the Class 2A 800 meter run state final was gunning for one guy, Brendon Bounds, a Hawley high school senior. Being the target made for some apprehension on Brendon’s part but on this third attempt at the state meet he would not be denied. Brendon basically ran three races, the first 200 meters was an all out sprint for the lead which Bounds won. The next 400 glided past without much change. Then came the last 200. That is when Scott Dent from Crawford did his best to give the Bearcat and Brendon Bounds’ fans a heart attack. This very capable opponent came flying up from fourth place passing everybody like they were sitting still until he reached Brendon. Only the most stalwart Bearcat fan knew he would not go right past Brendon also. It was not to be for the defending champion from Crawford. Bounds matched him stride for stride down the stretch and in the last 10 meters drew apart the 2 tenths of a second margin that gave him the gold medal. Brendon’s time was 1:55.3.

Brendon also placed 4th in the mile run with a time of 4:34.24.

Hawley Baseball Progam makes History

The Hawley Bearcat Baseball Team continues to make history for the program this season. After a somewhat slow start in the beginning of district play the Bearcats steadily improved and won the games that were needed to secure a playoff spot. The turning point of the season came against Colorado City in the second half of district. "That was the game we needed to jump start our playoff run" said Brad Schoonmaker head coach. "Going into that game we knew how important it was to our season and would tell us what type of team we were" Hawley advanced to the Bi-District round where they met a very tough Coleman team. With the pitching of Senior Colter Welch and a clutch two run homerun by Senior Casey Wilkerson Hawley swept Coleman in two games. The Bearcats then earned an opportunity to avenge last years loss to Crane that knocked them out of the playoffs. The Area round games were played in Snyder where Crane took game one on Friday 7-3 but that was the last time in the series that Crane showed any life. Hawley won game two on Saturday 7-3 with a strong pitching performance by Sophomore Josh Harris. Game three showcased some of the Freshman that have stepped up thru the season with a key hit by Tanner Thompson that started an 8 run 4th inning and Daniel Brewer on the mound allowing only three hits in 4 1/3 innings shutting out Crane in 5 innings with a final score of 11 - 0. Hawley advances for the first time in school history to the Regional 1/4 finals where they will meet district opponent Anson for the right to move on in the state playoffs.

HAWLEY SOFTBALL GIRLS -- NO. 1 Rating

In Sunday's Abilene Reporter News in case you missed it:

The Hawley softball team moved into the No. 1 slot in The Texas Girls Coaches Association's Class 2A state rankings last week, but for coach Wyn D'Lee Roberts, it's a mixed blessing.
On the one hand, the Lady Bearcats are enjoying the recognition. On the other hand, there will be a target on their backs as long as they stand atop the mountain.
''Honestly, I would have preferred staying at No. 3,'' said Roberts, whose club took over the top spot after beating top-ranked Coahoma 3-0 on March 16. ''Now it feels like we're being gunned for, and there's a lot of pressure to stay at No. 1.
''But it's also a positive. The girls are working harder because they want to stay up there.''
There is more good news for Hawley.
Starting only three seniors, the Lady Bearcats are just scratching the surface of their potential.
Leading hitters Heather Cobb (.513) and Amber McCoy (.457) must be replaced, but sophomore pitcher Pee Wee Burton (10-4, 2.91 ERA) will return in 2008 with six other starters.
''We made it to the regional finals last year and we only lost one girl,'' Roberts said. ''This year I see us doing pretty well, and maybe even going to state.
''Next year, we've got two or three JV girls coming up who are pretty good and we've also got a very good eighth-grade group coming in.''
In other words, the Hawley program has reached the cliched point where it doesn't rebuild, but simply reloads.
