JV BEACATS DROP OPENER
JV BEACATS DROP OPENER
The Hawley JV Bearcats won some battles but lost the war in their season opener Vs Haskell here in Hawley Thursday night. The guys only trailed by eight points until half way though the fourth quarter when the heat and the Haskell linemen took a toll.
The Bearcats had a good opening drive but a turnover killed that hope. Then the defenses battled back and fourth into the second quarter when the Cats had a linebacker blitz called and missed the back coming on the draw resulting in Haskell’s first score. The offense turned the ball over on downs on the next drive but Jesse Duke got it right back with a fumble recovery. We then drove to the Indians 20-yard line before running out of time in the half.
Early in the third the Bearcat defense got another break when Kyle Sellers and Matt Penny pounced on an errant pitch from the Haskell quarterback. The offense was looking rather lethargic when Coach Hardin called time out and they all had a little pep talk. The Cats responded by driving the ball down to the Indian 12-yard line. At this point quarterback Josh Harris succumbed to cramps due to the fact it was slightly cooler than the surface of the sun on the field. This posed a problem seeing as how no one else on the team had ever taken a snap. Kyle Sellers bravely stepped in and made a fair account of himself. But the drive stalled out and the game settled back into the defensive struggle it started out as.
Midway thought the fourth quarter with the Indians deep in Bearcat territory Jessie Duke got to the quarterback trying to roll right and spun him around and sent him left. Most of the defense had rolled right with him and the outside contain broke down and in the end zone he went. Pressure on the passer from Mr Duke caused the extra point pass to miss its mark. Then with 3:16 to go in the game the Indian fullback ran through what looked like some very spent Bearcats for the final score of the game. Defensive pressure again caused a bad pass on the PAT.
The Bearcats start a four game road trip this Thursday in Rotan at 7:30. Maybe we will have a cloud to play under.
