HAWLEY SOFTBALL GIRLS -- NO. 1 Rating

In Sunday's Abilene Reporter News in case you missed it:

The Hawley softball team moved into the No. 1 slot in The Texas Girls Coaches Association's Class 2A state rankings last week, but for coach Wyn D'Lee Roberts, it's a mixed blessing.
On the one hand, the Lady Bearcats are enjoying the recognition. On the other hand, there will be a target on their backs as long as they stand atop the mountain.
''Honestly, I would have preferred staying at No. 3,'' said Roberts, whose club took over the top spot after beating top-ranked Coahoma 3-0 on March 16. ''Now it feels like we're being gunned for, and there's a lot of pressure to stay at No. 1.
''But it's also a positive. The girls are working harder because they want to stay up there.''
There is more good news for Hawley.
Starting only three seniors, the Lady Bearcats are just scratching the surface of their potential.
Leading hitters Heather Cobb (.513) and Amber McCoy (.457) must be replaced, but sophomore pitcher Pee Wee Burton (10-4, 2.91 ERA) will return in 2008 with six other starters.
''We made it to the regional finals last year and we only lost one girl,'' Roberts said. ''This year I see us doing pretty well, and maybe even going to state.
''Next year, we've got two or three JV girls coming up who are pretty good and we've also got a very good eighth-grade group coming in.''
In other words, the Hawley program has reached the cliched point where it doesn't rebuild, but simply reloads.
