JV Bearcats Hammer Rotan

JV Bearcats Hammer Rotan

They looked bigger than we did, they looked stronger than we did, and they looked faster than we did, but the Bearcats were having none of it in Rotan Thursday night. The offense scored eighteen unanswered points in the first quarter and used a steady defense to bring home the 33 to 16 win.

The Bearcats took the opening kick off and couldn’t get much done and were forced to punt. No problem. Matt Penny just stripped the ball from the punt returner and Kyle Sellers recovered setting the Bearcats up on the Yellowhammer’s 30-yard line. One 28-yard Josh Harris pass to a wide-open LJ Greenway and a 2-yard plunge by LJ and the Cats took a 6-0 lead. What happen on the ensuing kickoff is still up for debate. Whether the Bearcats were being tricky or the kicker just miss kicked the ball is the question. (We will go with the well-planned on-side kick story.) The up-side is it went ten yards and Robert Hall fell on it to put the Cats back on offense. The Bearacats running game was working well and several plays later Sellers went in the end zone for the 12-0 lead. They next offensive series saw Harris hit Sellers with a 33-yard pass to the 10 and then sweep left end on the bootleg for the Bearcat’s third score

Rotan got on the board in the second quarter with a long run and PAT. They’re on-side kick failed and the Bearcat’s drove it right down to the 10 before a turnover ended the threat. Again this was no problem for the Cats as they took the ball right back when Jessie Duke fell on a Greenway-forced fumble. The Hammers kind of deflated and the running game pounded out a great drive including a fourth down conversion and ending with Sellers going off left tackle to score and Seth Manly adding the 2-point conversion off the right side. Everyone went to the break with the Bearcats leading 26 to 8.

The second half was mostly defense for the Cats. The stats will have a new category this week titled “team tackles” due to the fact there were so many Bearcats in on some tackles I couldn’t divide the credit! Duke and Jon Hardesty recorded sacks and Josh Harris contributed with a 43-yard interception return and Robert Hall split the uprights for the PAT. In the third a most unfortunate event occurred when a young man from Rotan broke his leg making a tackle. The Hawley coaches made a good account of themselves helping paramedics and this young man. Word is the coaches have also come up with a football for the entire team to sign and send to the Yellowhammer to speed his recovery. The Hammers added another score late in the fourth.

The one thing that was adding since last week’s loss was a little fire. The Bearcat came out with a lot of enthusiasm and it had a telling effect on the game. This week everybody pick their car pool partners for the trip west to Forsan where we will hunt Buffalo at 5:30.
