Hardin Hired as New HISD Athletic Director

The Hawley Bearcat Athletic Department is officially under new leadership. The HISD board of Trustees hired Coach Buddy Hardin on Monday, Feb 14th as the new Athletic Director and head football coach. Superintendent Bobby Matthews from a field of over 140 applicants selected Hardin after an extensive search. The new coach is expected to take his post on the campuses of Hawley ISD on March 01, 2005.
Coach Hardin and his wife, Tanya, were both present at the board meeting to meet the board members as well as several staff members and parents who came out to welcome them to Bearcat Country. Hardin said, “I’m very excited at the opportunity to make Hawley Bearcat football into a serious contender. There’s a lot of work ahead but work that can be accomplished. And what is very important to me is that these young men enjoy playing the game. I am looking forward to a great season.”
Hardin grew up in the Big Country area, living in Brownwood and then graduating from high school in Santa Anna. He was a stand out athlete who participated in basketball, track, tennis, golf, and football. He was the quarterback of his high school team. After high school, Hardin went to Tarleton State University. He graduated in 1995 with a teaching certification in Spanish. His first post was at Granbury where he coached for six years. His jobs included two years at the junior high level, three years as a position coach in varsity football, freshman basketball and assistant varsity basketball, and head varsity track. In his first year as the head track coach he took the program from 13 members to 38. Then he served as the middle school Athletic Coordinator for two. Hardin said that was a great opportunity for him to learn about budgeting and supervising. He had a staff of thirteen coaches under his direction at that time.
Next, Hardin moved to Teague where he has been for the last three years. Last year Teague was predicted to be sixth in the district and ended up being the district champions. He was the offensive coordinator and part of the staff that led Teague to their first playoff win in the history of the school. They lost in the Regional round of the playoffs to Newton who went on to take second place in the State.
Buddy and Tanya have a one son, Wilson, who will turn one-year-old just days before his dad takes over the Hawley athletic program. The community of Hawley would like to extend a great BEARCAT WELCOME to this nice young couple and wish them great success as they service the kids of HISD.
