Varsity Football Rotan at Hawley

Varsity Football
Rotan at Hawley

The Hawley Bearcats hammered the Rotan Yellowhammers on Friday at Forrest Field. After a disappointing loss to the Haskell Indians last week, the Bearcats came home to play ball.

After receiving the opening kick off Dustin Polk returned it 22 yards to our own 41 yard line to start the opening drive for the Bearcats. The drive was cut short a few plays later after an errant pass to Bearcat receiver Jeremy Gwinn was intercepted by Rotan. The Bearcats were not shaken by this turn of events; the defense just stepped up and went to work, forcing the Yellowhammers to punt giving Hawley excellent field position. Two plays later Kyle Sloan punches it in from the 1 yard line. The PAT was good. The Yellowhammers countered 3 plays later with a touchdown pass but the Bearcat line blocked the PAT. After receiving the kickoff the Bearcats made a solid offensive drive resulting in a touchdown pass from Cody Sims to Jeremy Gwinn. The PAT was good. Rotan continued their assault and scored just 2 plays later on a run up the middle. The Yellowhammers were unsuccessful at their attempt to tie the game at 14 by running the 2 point conversion and getting stopped short. Hawley’s offense had trouble getting their plan of attack executed forcing the Bearcats to punt. The punt was blocked and picked up by the Yellowhammers and run in for a touchdown. The PAT was no good missing wide to the right. The Bearcat offense was unable to complete their drive and turned the ball over on downs near the 50 yard line. The Yellowhammer’s drive was cut short when Cody Garrett intercepted the ball on our own 27 yard line. This sparked a fire in Hawley’s offense and the Bearcats scored just 7 plays later. The PAT was good. This didn’t phase the Yellowhammers as they scored on a long run just 2 plays later. The 2 point conversion was completed but was called back due to an ineligible receiver down field against Rotan. Their 2nd attempt failed. The Bearcats managed to get their offensive train back on track and drove the length of the field with some well executed plays, which ended with another score. The PAT was good. The Bearcat defense squashed the Rotan drive by forcing a fumble and recovering it on our own 14 yard line. Time expired in the half with the score Rotan 24 Hawley 28.

The Bearcat defense returned the 2nd half and virtually shut down the Yellowhammer’s offense, allowing only 1 touchdown the 2nd half. The Bearcat offense added 22 points to their tally to end the game. The final score was Rotan 30 Hawley 50. The Bearcat offensive line should be congratulated for assisting in 383 rushing yards and 37 passing yards along with the Defense for allowing only 221 rushing yards and 24 passing yards. The leading rushers for the Bearcats were as follows:

S. Keith
14/184 1TD

K. Sloan
18/84 1TD

J. Stevens
10/82 1 TD

D. Polk
13/61

S. Lockwood

The Bearcat players wish to thank all of the fans who came out to show their support for their team. They said it is inspiring to see you all in the stands and hear your words of encouragement as they face their opponents. The Bearcats face the Forsan Buffaloes next Saturday at the Mustang bowl in Sweetwater. Let’s all rally our support for these players and have a good crowd at the game on Saturday.

Go Bearcats!!
