BALLINGER WEARS DOWN JV BEARCATS
The Hawley JV Bearcats went down to Ballinger Thursday night and played hard but gave up too many turnovers and went down to a larger more experienced bunch of Bearcats 32 to 12. It seemed that for every good thing that happened an equal and opposite thing was bound to happen.
The Cats stayed even with Ballinger though the first quarter with the only highlights being a 20-yard Seth Manly run and a 12-yard Kyle Sellers sack. In the second quarter a good thing happened when Jarron Easley forced a fumble and Cade Manuel fell on it. Two plays later we fumbled it right back. With 5:33 left in the 2nd our linebacker blitz went right past the QB draw and Ballinger went up 6-0. The Cats got the ball back and completed a 19 yard Josh Harris pass to Robert Hall. Then the Cats fumbled again on the very next play. This led to a 1-yard plunge on fourth and goal with 23 seconds left in the half to put the foreign Bearcats ahead by 12-0. The Cats got the ball back and hit Sellers with a 40-yard pass before time ran out in the half.
Midway thought the third quarter we ran into a little rough spot. It went like this: Ballinger: 33 yard TD pass; Bearcats: two plays and an interception; Ballinger: 27-yard TD pass. Score Ballinger 25 Cats 0. A lot of teams would have sagged a little bit at this point but to the Cats’ credit I think we played a little harder. It paid off when Manly went 45 yards, outran the defense to the 4-yard line, then flew forward to stick the ball right on the pylon for their first score.
At the start of the fourth quarter the Bearcat invoked their “nothing to lose” motto and faked a punt on their own 23 yard line. With no regrets they had to give Ballinger the ball and three plays later it was 32 to 6. The Cats sill wouldn’t give up and several plays later Manly again got loose this time for 60 yards and a TD. Our on-side kick was nearly executed perfectly but couldn’t be handled before it got out of bounds. The last good thing that happened looked kind of like the first only reversed. Manuel forced the fumble this time and Easley fell on it. Time ran out on the Cats last drive to end the game.
The Bearcats have the week off before traveling to Stamford Oct. 6th to begin their defense of the JV District Championship. Kickoff will be at 7:00. See ya there.
