JV Bearcats Slosh to Victory
It was a dark and stormy night. Though the night came an unstoppable Hawley running game and a stifling Bearcat defense that brought light and warmth to the soggy Bearcat fans and a mark in the win column with a 42 –0 triumph over Stamford Thursday night. The balanced running of Seth Manly, Robert Hall, Kyle Sellers, and Josh Harris piled up 293 yards on 25 carries for an 11.7 yard average carry. Cory Baldock led the defense by playing like a wild man making 5.5 tackles, two for losses. Evidence that the defense played well is the fact that the secondary only made two tackles all night.
The defense started the fireworks when on Stamford’s second play from scrimmage after the opening kick off Baldock forced a fumble that Cade Manuel promptly fell on. Four plays later Manly got loose for a 25-yard TD. Matt Penny added the PAT on a run up the middle. Penny then slid on the free football on the ensuing kickoff to put the Cats right back on offense. The payoff came when Penny scored from 8 yards out several plays later. The PAT was run in by, you guessed it, Penny.
Stanford had three plays on offense before Hall recovered a Bulldog fumble and the Cat offense was back in business. Manly for 18 yards, Sellers for 17 yards, Sellers in for the 3-yard TD. The PAT was backed up by a 15-yard penalty then failed to convert. The first quarter ended Hawley 22 Stamford 0.
Next time down the field Sellers had a 16-yard run end after a superman dive to the one-yard line. Next play Sellers went over from the one for another Bearcat score. The PAT snap got past the QB and a surprised Manly picked it up and made the best of it but couldn’t make the goal line. The rest of the second quarter was highlighted by the only pass attempt of the night by the Bearcats and a play in which Baldock pressured the QB then made the tackle on the receiver 7 yards down the field. GREAT HUSTLE!!!
The second half went rather quickly and you didn’t hear any complaints from anyone. The rain had never let up, it was cold, and it was 28-0 so the clock ran freely. The highlights were a great Jon Hardesty block on a Sellers 17-yard run, a misdirection play that let Hall walk in from 11 yards out with Hall getting the PAT, another onside kick recovery and a Harris 55 yard TD run on the bootleg.
The Bearcats have finally got a home game against Colorado next Thursday. The game will start at 6:00 p.m. Come watch all the Bearcat action .
