8th grade Bearcats vs Ballinger

The Hawley Bearcats 8th grade came up short Thursday against a very good Ballinger team. The final score was Hawley 22 Ballinjger 34. Ballinger jumped out to a 14-0 lead before quarter back Tanner Thompson hit Daniel Brewer for a 45 yard touchdown pass. The two point conversion was good by Daniel Brewer. Tanner then completed two more touchdown passes both to Steve Bass for 30 yards each. Two point conversion was good on one of the attempts by Chandler Pearson. This made the score at that time 22 to 20 in favor of Hawley. Ballinger then scored two more times in the 4th quarter to win the ball game. Leading tackler for Hawley defense was Jeremy Ortega with nine tackles.

The Hawley 8th grade vs Winters

The Hawley 8th grade played Winters Thursday in Hawley. Final Score was 41 to 0 in favor of Hawley. Offense performed really well but defense was what really helped the Bearcats. The defense only gave up two 1st downs and a total of 31 yards of offense. The Defense also created six turnovers. Patrick Daily recovered 3 fumbles, Daniel Brewer recovered 1 fumble and Kyle Compton intercepted 2 passes and returned them for a total of 75 yards. Jeremy Ortega also blocked 1 punt. Key players for the defense were Earl Miller, Tim Lutz, Chandler Pearson, Dustin Griffin, Daniel Brewer, Kyle Compton, Jeremy Ortega, Patrick Daily, Raymond Bullard and Kaleb Faulks.
Offensively Hawley took advantage of all the turnovers scoring on all but 2 possessions. The offensive line did a great job opening holes and giving protection.

1st Quarter:
Tanner Thompson 1 yard touchdown run
2 point conversion good by Kaleb Faulks
Daniel Brewer 6 yard touchdown run
2 point conversion from Tanner Thompson to Kyle Compton

Ballinger Defeats Hawley

By Robert Adkins

The Hawley Bearcats hosted the Ballinger Bearcats Friday night at Forrest Field. Hawley was coming off of their win last week over the Winters Blizzards and was feeling pretty confident facing off against the undefeated Ballinger team.

Hawley started the game by kicking and Ballinger returned it to their own 31-yard line to start their drive. With a steady progression, Ballinger managed to put together a scoring drive that took 11 plays that ended with a 1-yard quarterback keeper up the middle for 6 points. The PAT was good. Hawley started their 1st drive on their own 35-yard line after receiving the kick from Ballinger and adding 5-yards for a flag on the play. Hawley puts it to Ballinger by scoring in only 7 plays with a 40-yard run by Seth Keith. Hawley attempted a 2-point conversion on a fake PAT but fumbled the ball. Ballinger kept Hawley from scoring for the rest of the half while managing to add 21 more points to their tally, making the score at half time Ballinger 28 – Hawley 6.

The 3rd quarter was scoreless with strong defensive stands from both teams. Hawley did manage to put together a scoring drive in the 4th quarter on a good run from Kyle Sloan. The Hawley offense had a really good game, with 373 total net yards compared to Ballinger’s 416 net yards. The individual stats are as follows:

The Hawley Bearcats are open this week in preparation for their District opener and Homecoming game against the Stamford Bulldogs on October 7th at Forrest Field. So make plans to attend and let’s show these young men that Bearcat pride and start district play with a big win against the Bulldogs. Go Bearcats!

BALLINGER WEARS DOWN JV BEARCATS

The Hawley JV Bearcats went down to Ballinger Thursday night and played hard but gave up too many turnovers and went down to a larger more experienced bunch of Bearcats 32 to 12. It seemed that for every good thing that happened an equal and opposite thing was bound to happen.

The Cats stayed even with Ballinger though the first quarter with the only highlights being a 20-yard Seth Manly run and a 12-yard Kyle Sellers sack. In the second quarter a good thing happened when Jarron Easley forced a fumble and Cade Manuel fell on it. Two plays later we fumbled it right back. With 5:33 left in the 2nd our linebacker blitz went right past the QB draw and Ballinger went up 6-0. The Cats got the ball back and completed a 19 yard Josh Harris pass to Robert Hall. Then the Cats fumbled again on the very next play. This led to a 1-yard plunge on fourth and goal with 23 seconds left in the half to put the foreign Bearcats ahead by 12-0. The Cats got the ball back and hit Sellers with a 40-yard pass before time ran out in the half.

Midway thought the third quarter we ran into a little rough spot. It went like this: Ballinger: 33 yard TD pass; Bearcats: two plays and an interception; Ballinger: 27-yard TD pass. Score Ballinger 25 Cats 0. A lot of teams would have sagged a little bit at this point but to the Cats’ credit I think we played a little harder. It paid off when Manly went 45 yards, outran the defense to the 4-yard line, then flew forward to stick the ball right on the pylon for their first score.

At the start of the fourth quarter the Bearcat invoked their “nothing to lose” motto and faked a punt on their own 23 yard line. With no regrets they had to give Ballinger the ball and three plays later it was 32 to 6. The Cats sill wouldn’t give up and several plays later Manly again got loose this time for 60 yards and a TD. Our on-side kick was nearly executed perfectly but couldn’t be handled before it got out of bounds. The last good thing that happened looked kind of like the first only reversed. Manuel forced the fumble this time and Easley fell on it. Time ran out on the Cats last drive to end the game.

The Bearcats have the week off before traveling to Stamford Oct. 6th to begin their defense of the JV District Championship. Kickoff will be at 7:00. See ya there.

Hawley Bearcats Fight to the Finish for an 18-20 Victory over Winters

by Robert Adkins

Hawley traveled to Winters to take on the Blizzards Friday night and the Bearcats received a surprisingly warm welcome from the Blizzards for their homecoming match up.

What can one say about Hawley’s performance in this game? The Bearcats simply never stopped fighting. With 11 penalties for 95 yards, 2 touchdowns called back, 2 dropped passes in the end zone, and 2 overtime periods, Hawley emerged victorious.

The Bearcats started the game by kicking off to the Blizzards and holding them with no 1st downs on this opening drive and forcing them to punt. Hawley started their drive from their own 35-yard line and the Blizzards reciprocated the defensive battle by holding the Bearcats and forcing them to punt without a 1st down. Then to add icing on the cake, the Blizzards blocked the punt after a bad snap and recovered the ball on the Bearcat 9 yard line. The Blizzards scored on their 1st play of the series with a 9-yard run to the right for a touchdown. The PAT was blocked and Hawley covered it. The Bearcats started from their own 31 after receiving the kick from Winters but were unable to turn it into a scoring drive.

With a solid offensive performance the Bearcats were able to move the ball against the Blizzard’s defense but weren’t as successful at putting points or should I say keeping points on the scoreboard. With good runs from Josh Stevens (23 Car. For 116 yds.), Kyle Sloan (15 Car. For 62 yds.), Seth Lockwood (8 Car. For 16 yds 1 TD), and Seth Keith (23 Car. For 188 yds.) the Bearcats put together several good drives. Billy Penny, Dustin Polk, and Kody Sims also had carries contributing to the Bearcat offense. The Hawley receivers aided the offense with 63 yards; Steven Houck had 1 rec for 8 yds. 1 TD, Wes Lambert had 1 rec for 9 yds. 1 TD, and Tracy Whitehead had 3 rec for 46 yds. The Bearcats had a sum of 460 total yards offense.

The Bearcat defense did their job by holding Winters to only 300 yards total offense. Justin New, Stetson Gartman, and Chad Taillon led the defense in tackles with assists from Austin Adkins, Corbin Coonrod, Cody Garrett, L.J. Greenway, Seth Lockwood, and Billy Penny. Austin Adkins and Kyle Mooney both had fumble recoveries that turned the ball over to the Bearcats. It was a total team effort to put this game in the win column.

The Bearcat fans would like to congratulate Coach Hardin and his entire staff along with the Bearcat players for a job well done. Hawley will host the Ballinger Bearcats at Forrest Field on Friday night at 7:30. Please make plans to attend and lets show these young men our support. Go Bearcats!

JV Bearcats Thaw Blizzard Rally

The Hawley Bearcat JV played a game Thursday that looked a lot like the Cowboy game Monday night with one exception. They didn’t blow it. The Bearcats seem to have the defensive struggle in hand 20 to 6 until the last five minutes of the fourth quarter saw the Blizzard scoring two touchdowns but failing to convert their points after to fall to the Bearcats 20 to 18.

It all started well enough when the Bearcats retrieved an on-side kick to start the game and seven plays later Matt Penny got lose for a 16-yard TD around left end. Josh Harris found a wide-open Seth Manly in the corner of the end zone for the extra points. The Blizzard pass attack went to work down the field until Kyle Sellers sacked the Blizzard QB then intercepted him to kill their opening drive. Both teams next drives ended up without much production, which put the Bearcats, back on offense. The Bearcat offense then put the Blizzards back on offense by fumbling the ball on the Winters 45. Robert Hall blitzed though on fourth and short and got the Bearcats the ball back on the Hawley 38. Harris had two good runs to the Winters 10-yard line before we shot ourselves in the foot again by fumbling the ball away. The Bearcats held and forced a bad punt and were in business at the Blizzard 28-yard line. Four plays later including two sacks the ball went back to Winters who promptly threw it back to Harris. The Bearcats again went nowhere and the half ended 8-0.

The “three and out” curse struck the Cats again on the first drive but the interception curse hit the Blizzards again with Rodney Rud on the receiving end. Their running game got going next when Robert Hall converted a fourth down with a 16-yard run that set up a 16-yard bootleg by Josh Harris for the Cats second score. The PAT failed and the Cats took a 14-0 lead with only 38 seconds left in the third.

The Bearcat defense held to Blizzards in check and the offense converted yet another fourth down on a 20-yard run by Harris that led to a 14-yard scamper around left end and another six points for Penny. The pass for the PAT was incomplete and with 5:50 left in the game the Cats had a 20 to 6 lead. This is the scary part! The Blizzards kick-off return looked to be an easy TD but Rud made a touchdown-saving tackle at the Bearcat 30-yard line. Several plays later they were in the end zone but their PAT failed. The Cats then made the game interesting by muffing a pitch and giving the ball to the Winters at the Cat 36 with only an 8-point lead. The Cat defense went to work holding the Blizzards to fourth down but a defensive pass interference call in the end zone put the ball on the two-yard line and the Winters QB punched it in to close the gap to 20-18 with 1:44 left. With the disappointment of a tie looming over them the Cat defense rose to the occasion and stuffed the PAT run to keep that from happening.

The Cats are 3-1 now and head to Ballinger on Thursday for a 6:30 kickoff. Tackle stats will be low due to the number of incomplete passes thrown by the Blizzards.

STATS:

Rushing: Harris 4/78, Penny 15/70, Sellers 13/62, Manly 9/41, Masavage 8/30, Hall 2/13

Buffaloes Stampede Over Hawley

Buffaloes Stampede Over Hawley
By Robert Adkins

The Forsan Buffaloes matched up against the Hawley Bearcats in the Sammy Baugh Classic at the Mustang Bowl in Sweetwater, Texas Saturday night.

After winning the coin toss and electing to receive the opening kickoff the Buffaloes began their assault. The Buffaloes were successful at both their running and passing game, keying on former Bearcat Wes Newcomb. They scored on a 15-yard end around run to the right side and added a 2-point conversion with 7:25 left in the 1st quarter. Hawley’s Dustin Polk received their 1st kickoff on their own 20-yard line and returned it back to their own 37-yard line to start the Bearcat drive. Josh Stevens fumbled the handoff from Kody Sims but the Bearcats recovered. Josh Stevens made up for the fumble with a series of good runs up the middle. Dustin Polk and Seth Lockwood also had good runs on the drive to put the Bearcats deep in Buffalo territory. On the next play Polk fumbles the handoff from Sims and the Buffaloes recover on their own 21-yard line to end the Bearcat drive. Forsan stuck to their running game and managed to open a hole in the Hawley defense allowing Wes Newcomb a 42 yard run down to the Bearcat 25 yard line. With 2nd down and 6 yards to go the Buffaloes completed a 21-yard touchdown pass. The Buffaloes again with the direct snap to the kicker ran a bootleg around the right end for the 2-point conversion. With 3:29 left in the 1st quarter the score was Forsan – 16, Hawley – 0. The Bearcats began their drive on their own 38-yard line. Sims completed an 18-yard pass to Wes Lambert. After advancing the ball to the Buffalo 42 yard line Kody Sims and Nathan Sharp fumble the exchange and the Buffaloes recover to kill the Bearcat drive once again. After a solid drive deep into Bearcat territory, it was Forsans turn to give up the ball with a fumble on the 18-yard line of Hawley. Kyle Sloan made a 28-yard run to give Hawley some momentum for the drive. A few plays later Stetson Gartman makes a 13-yard run to put the Bearcats on the Buffalo 1 yard line with 1st and goal. Seth Lockwood runs it in for a Hawley touchdown. The PAT was no good after hitting the upright, but a flag on the play against Forsan gave Hawley another attempt. This time the Bearcats line up for the 2-point conversion and drive it up the middle. Making the score Forsan – 16, Hawley – 8 with 7:37 left to go in the half.

The Buffaloes start their attack on their own 32-yard line. On their 1st play, Stetson Gartman and Austin Adkins stopped them for a 3-yard loss. The Bearcat defense stopped the drive forcing the Buffaloes to punt. The punt rolled into the end zone for a touchback placing the ball on the 20-yard line to start the Bearcat drive. With the Bearcat’s offense gaining momentum Coach Hardin decides to go for it on 4th down and 2. On a handoff to Sloan up the middle Hawley makes the first down to keep the drive alive. On a completed passes from Kody Sims to Dustin Polk and Steven Houck and a couple of good runs by Kyle Sloan and Stetson Gartman, the Bearcats set up a field goal from Sloan making the score Forsan – 16, Hawley – 11 with the 1st half ending.

With Hawley receiving the kickoff to start the 2nd half, the kick goes out of bounds and the Bearcats start their drive on their own 30-yard line. With very little progress, the Bearcat offense is forced to punt giving the Buffaloes possession on their own 26-yard line. The Buffaloes completed a 50-yard pass to put them deep in Bearcat territory. With steady advances the Buffaloes move the ball to the Bearcat 10 yard line. Forsan throws an interception in the end zone for a touchback and Hawley gets the ball on their 20. Seth Keith makes a 62-yard run down to the 18 yard line of the Buffaloes, then he finishes the drive on the next play with an 18 yard run for a Bearcat touchdown. The 2-point conversion was no good. The score was Forsan – 16, Hawley – 17. The Buffaloes start the drive on their 26-yard line. The Buffaloes had moved the ball into Bearcat territory when a handoff to Wes Newcomb was fumbled after a hard hit from Chad Taillon and Austin Adkins, but the Buffaloes managed to retain possession. The Hawley defense kept up the pressure forcing the Buffaloes to punt. Hawley took possession on their own 1-foot line. The Bearcats moved the ball out to their own 13-yard line. Then Sims hit Sloan for a long pass resulting in a 35-yard gain. Josh Stevens makes an 8-yard run to put the Bearcats in Buffalo territory. The Bearcats took it down to the Forsan 2 yard line on carries by Sloan, Stevens, and Keith before Keith ran it in for a touchdown. The PAT was good making the score Forsan – 16, Hawley – 24 with 9:09 left in the game.

The Buffaloes started their drive with excellent field position on the Bearcat 45. After an unsuccessful attempt by the Bearcat defense to stop the drive the Buffaloes scored and capitalized on the 2-point conversion to tie the score at 24 with 5:04 left in the ball game. Hawley starts their drive on their own 8-yard line hoping to use the clock and score. After carries by Keith, Stevens, Lockwood, and Sloan and a pass reception by Polk, the Bearcats turn the ball over on downs at their own 46-yard line. The Buffaloes just stampeded over the Bearcat defense and scored a touchdown and a 2-point conversion with just 0:37 left on the clock. The final score was Forsan – 32, Hawley – 24. JV BEARCATS BRING DOWN BUFFALOES

JV BEARCATS BRING DOWN BUFFALOES

In a recent movie a coach asked his team if they could be “perfect”. The Hawley JV Bearcats went to Forsan Thursday night and were, let’s say, near perfect. The offense ran at will and the defense only gave up 7 yards in the first quarter. Seth Manly and Robert Hall had great efforts on both sides of the ball with Manly running for 103 yards and making 8 tackles and Hall running for 80 yards and making 7 tackles in the 34 to 14 win.

In the first quarter the Bearcats had a workmanlike, time-consuming drive highlighted by Halls 24-yard dash to the 10 and his 10-yard scamper to pay dirt. Matt Penny completed a pass to Roper Morrow for the PAT. There was a little drama in the second quarter when the Cats were faced with a fourth and long. Josh Harris converted with a 20-yard pass to LJ Greenwood. On the very next play Harris bootlegged around left end and went 25 yards to the end zone. The PAT failed and the Cats led 14 – 0.

Forsan then drove to the Bearcat 15-yard line. On fourth down they threw a swing pass to the right and the Bearcats swarmed to the ball. The running back reversed his field and all the Hawley fans had a bad feeling in their guts. When you saw the wall of Buffaloes set up you envisioned the enemy running back waltzing in the end zone. Safety Manly slipped his block, ran the man down and launched himself at the last minute to bring him down short of the first down. The next Hawley drive stalled and the Buffaloes were right back at the Cats 2-yard line where Wes Campbell forced a fumble and Greenway fell on it to end that threat. Manly had a 41-yard run that got us out of the shadow of out own goal but the second quarter ended before the drive could bear fruit.

The Bearcats kicked off in the second half and then promptly took the ball back when Greenway got his second turnover falling on a muffed pitch by the Buffalo tailback at the Forsan 47-yard line. The offense then fed to Buffaloes a steady diet of Hall and Manly until they handed it to Greenway for 12 yards right up the middle for a TD. Next came the not so perfect part when the Cats gave up a 54-yard TD but then stopped the Buffaloes from converting their PAT. Hawley 20 Forsan 6. Manly added a 5-yard TD run at the end of the third quarter and Harris bootlegged again for the extra point.

The fourth quarter consisted of long drive by both teams each paying off in the end. Forsan scored and made their PAT. On Hawley’s drive they were confronted with a fourth and 20. No problem, they just gave the ball to Matt Penny who ran for 22 yards and a first down. Several plays later Penny went around the right end for an 8-yard touchdown and around the left end for the PAT. On the follow kickoff Wes Campbell forced another fumble and Kyle Sellers jumped on it. The Cats ran out the clock for the win.

The Bearcat’s will again put on their traveling shoes and head to Winters Thursday for a 5:00 kickoff. It’s starting to be fine football weather so come watch the Cats stop a Blizzard!!!!

Varsity Football Rotan at Hawley

Varsity Football
Rotan at Hawley

The Hawley Bearcats hammered the Rotan Yellowhammers on Friday at Forrest Field. After a disappointing loss to the Haskell Indians last week, the Bearcats came home to play ball.

After receiving the opening kick off Dustin Polk returned it 22 yards to our own 41 yard line to start the opening drive for the Bearcats. The drive was cut short a few plays later after an errant pass to Bearcat receiver Jeremy Gwinn was intercepted by Rotan. The Bearcats were not shaken by this turn of events; the defense just stepped up and went to work, forcing the Yellowhammers to punt giving Hawley excellent field position. Two plays later Kyle Sloan punches it in from the 1 yard line. The PAT was good. The Yellowhammers countered 3 plays later with a touchdown pass but the Bearcat line blocked the PAT. After receiving the kickoff the Bearcats made a solid offensive drive resulting in a touchdown pass from Cody Sims to Jeremy Gwinn. The PAT was good. Rotan continued their assault and scored just 2 plays later on a run up the middle. The Yellowhammers were unsuccessful at their attempt to tie the game at 14 by running the 2 point conversion and getting stopped short. Hawley’s offense had trouble getting their plan of attack executed forcing the Bearcats to punt. The punt was blocked and picked up by the Yellowhammers and run in for a touchdown. The PAT was no good missing wide to the right. The Bearcat offense was unable to complete their drive and turned the ball over on downs near the 50 yard line. The Yellowhammer’s drive was cut short when Cody Garrett intercepted the ball on our own 27 yard line. This sparked a fire in Hawley’s offense and the Bearcats scored just 7 plays later. The PAT was good. This didn’t phase the Yellowhammers as they scored on a long run just 2 plays later. The 2 point conversion was completed but was called back due to an ineligible receiver down field against Rotan. Their 2nd attempt failed. The Bearcats managed to get their offensive train back on track and drove the length of the field with some well executed plays, which ended with another score. The PAT was good. The Bearcat defense squashed the Rotan drive by forcing a fumble and recovering it on our own 14 yard line. Time expired in the half with the score Rotan 24 Hawley 28.

The Bearcat defense returned the 2nd half and virtually shut down the Yellowhammer’s offense, allowing only 1 touchdown the 2nd half. The Bearcat offense added 22 points to their tally to end the game. The final score was Rotan 30 Hawley 50. The Bearcat offensive line should be congratulated for assisting in 383 rushing yards and 37 passing yards along with the Defense for allowing only 221 rushing yards and 24 passing yards. The leading rushers for the Bearcats were as follows:

S. Keith
14/184 1TD

K. Sloan
18/84 1TD

J. Stevens
10/82 1 TD

D. Polk
13/61

S. Lockwood
6/23

B. Penny
5/21 2 TD

B. Malone
1/17

The Bearcat players wish to thank all of the fans who came out to show their support for their team. They said it is inspiring to see you all in the stands and hear your words of encouragement as they face their opponents. The Bearcats face the Forsan Buffaloes next Saturday at the Mustang bowl in Sweetwater. Let’s all rally our support for these players and have a good crowd at the game on Saturday.

Go Bearcats!!

They looked bigger than we did, they looked stronger than we did, and they looked faster than we did, but the Bearcats were having none of it in Rotan Thursday night. The offense scored eighteen unanswered points in the first quarter and used a steady defense to bring home the 33 to 16 win.

The Bearcats took the opening kick off and couldn’t get much done and were forced to punt. No problem. Matt Penny just stripped the ball from the punt returner and Kyle Sellers recovered setting the Bearcats up on the Yellowhammer’s 30-yard line. One 28-yard Josh Harris pass to a wide-open LJ Greenway and a 2-yard plunge by LJ and the Cats took a 6-0 lead. What happen on the ensuing kickoff is still up for debate. Whether the Bearcats were being tricky or the kicker just miss kicked the ball is the question. (We will go with the well-planned on-side kick story.) The up-side is it went ten yards and Robert Hall fell on it to put the Cats back on offense. The Bearacats running game was working well and several plays later Sellers went in the end zone for the 12-0 lead. They next offensive series saw Harris hit Sellers with a 33-yard pass to the 10 and then sweep left end on the bootleg for the Bearcat’s third score

Rotan got on the board in the second quarter with a long run and PAT. They’re on-side kick failed and the Bearcat’s drove it right down to the 10 before a turnover ended the threat. Again this was no problem for the Cats as they took the ball right back when Jessie Duke fell on a Greenway-forced fumble. The Hammers kind of deflated and the running game pounded out a great drive including a fourth down conversion and ending with Sellers going off left tackle to score and Seth Manly adding the 2-point conversion off the right side. Everyone went to the break with the Bearcats leading 26 to 8.

The second half was mostly defense for the Cats. The stats will have a new category this week titled “team tackles” due to the fact there were so many Bearcats in on some tackles I couldn’t divide the credit! Duke and Jon Hardesty recorded sacks and Josh Harris contributed with a 43-yard interception return and Robert Hall split the uprights for the PAT. In the third a most unfortunate event occurred when a young man from Rotan broke his leg making a tackle. The Hawley coaches made a good account of themselves helping paramedics and this young man. Word is the coaches have also come up with a football for the entire team to sign and send to the Yellowhammer to speed his recovery. The Hammers added another score late in the fourth.

The one thing that was adding since last week’s loss was a little fire. The Bearcat came out with a lot of enthusiasm and it had a telling effect on the game. This week everybody pick their car pool partners for the trip west to Forsan where we will hunt Buffalo at 5:30.
