Hawley Defeats Stamford in District Opener

By Robert Adkins

The Hawley Bearcats defeated the Stamford Bulldogs Friday night at Forrest Field to start district play for the 2 teams. There was a good crowd for the home team as it was Hawley’s homecoming.

The game started with the Bulldogs receiving the opening kickoff and starting their drive from the 11-yard line. The Bearcat defense did an excellent job and forced the Bulldogs to punt. Hawley had a misque on the reception that gave Stamford the ball back for a 1st down. The Bearcat defense didn’t falter, and a few plays later intercepted the ball giving the Bearcats excellent field position. The Bearcats scored later on a 1-yard run by Josh Stevens. The PAT was no good. Stamford received the kick and started their drive from the 16-yard line. A few plays later the Bearcats intercepted the ball to give Hawley good field position deep in Bulldog territory. Hawley turned it into a touchdown on a 1-yard run by Seth Lockwood. The 2 point conversion was no good overthrowing Jeremy Gwinn in the corner of the endzone. The score after 8 minutes of play was Hawley – 12, Stamford – 0.

The Bulldogs started their drive on the 21-yard line, but was forced to punt after an excellent stance by the Bearcat defense. Hawley started their drive on their own 42-yard line. With good runs from Seth Keith, Kyle Sloan, and Josh Stevens, the Bearcats advanced the ball 57 yards to turn the ball over, ending the Bearcat drive. Stamford took the turnover and drove the length of the field and scored on a 25-yard pass. The PAT was good.

Hawley received the kick and started their next drive from their 30-yard line. The Bearcats continued their ground assault with solid advances from Stevens, Keith, and Sloan, but the drive was cut short by an intercepted pass from Kody Sims to intended receiver Wes Lambert. The Bulldogs hardly got their offense settled in when Chad Taillon, DT for the Bearcats made a one arm grab to snatch an interception from the Bulldogs to get the Bearcats fired up for their drive. But no sooner had the Bearcats started the drive, when a fumble that was recovered by Hawley was given possession to Stamford by the Zebra Crew. It looked like the Bulldogs were on a scoring drive when once again a ray of hope shined Hawley’s way when Casey Wilkerson came up with an interception on a deflected pass. But the Bearcats were unable to keep the drive alive and turned the ball over on downs. The Bearcat defense was able to hold the Bulldogs and forced them to punt, Hawley was unable to put together a drive and was forced to punt the ball away. The remainder of the half was scoreless. With the half ending the score was Hawley – 12, Stamford – 7.

The second half was mainly Stamford. The Bulldogs added 13 points to their tally while the Bearcats were plagued by penalties. Hawley started their final drive from their own 21-yard line and went 79 yards to score on a 1-yard run by Josh Stevens. The 2 point conversion was good on a completed pass from Kody Sims to wide open Wes Lambert in the corner of the endzone to tie the game at 20 with 28 seconds left in the game. This sent the game into overtime.

Stamford got first chance to put together a score in the OT period but a massive hit on the QB by Dustin Polk caused a fumble and the Bearcats recovered. Three plays later Josh Stevens finds the endzone on a 20-yard run around the left end to give the Bearcats a 26 to 20 lead over the Bulldogs. The PAT was no good. The final score was Hawley – 26, Stamford – 20. The individual stats were as follows:
