7th and 8th Action VS Anson

Hawley 7th grade played Anson Thursday and come up with a big win. Hawley's offense and defense both played extremely well, scoring 25 points and giving up 0. The defense was lead by Braden Newcomb, Larry Cribbs, Billy Brosh and Shelby Jones. Offensive standouts were Shelby Jones with six carries for 22 yards and 1 touchdown. Billy Brosh with 2 carries for 106 yards and 2 touchdowns. Brett DeVore also had a 63 yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Great job and good luck next week.

The Hawley 8th grade played a very good Anson team on Thursday. Just like last year it looked as if the defense's of both teams were going to dominate. No scoring occured until the 3rd quarter, when Anson got on the board first taking a 6 to 0 lead. The Bearcats answered back on a twentyfive yard touchdown run by Daniel Brewer, tieing the score at 6 to 6. In the fourth quarter Hawley took the lead on a 20 yard touchdown run by Kaleb Faulks. Hawley's Levi Miller blocked a punt to set up Hawley's next score. A six yard touchdown run by Daniel Brewer making the final score Hawley 18 Anson 6. The key to this game was the outstanding defensive performance by the entire defense lead by Levi & Earl Miller with fourteen combined solo tackles.
Offensive stats are:
Tanner Thompson 3 carries for 6 yards
Daniel Brewer 15 carries for 151 yards with 2 touchdowns
Kaleb Faulks 8 carries for 93 yards with 1 touchdown
Great job and good luck next week.

JV Bearcats Out-manned by Tigers

The Hawley JV Bearcats took the field Thursday night with 13 men and out-gained the Tigers in total offense 291 to 165 and first downs 14 to 8; but two touchdowns called back, two turnovers and a down box malfunction combined to do the Bearcats in with a 12 to 10 loss in Anson Thursday night.

It was obvious from the beginning it was going to be a defensive struggle with both teams playing good defense. The Bearcats running game was on as usual and they marched down the field on their second drive and put it in the end zone with an 11-yard run by Zane Masavage. The same play scored the PAT and the Cats led 8-0. The Cats then perpetrated a perfect on-side kick recovered by Matt Penny and went right back to work. The rest of the first half was very defensive, but late in the second quarter the Tigers drove to the Bearcat 14-yard line before being stopped. The Cats took over and had an illegal formation penalty on the first play. Repeated first down and went on. After second down everyone proceeded to third down with the exception of the down box operator. This led the Bearcats running the ball on fourth and eight thinking it was third and eight. Anson got in the end zone from the Cat 17-yard line seconds before the half ended. The Cats denied the PAT and the halftime score was Hawley 8 Anson 6.

The Cats’ kickoff for the second half went out of bounds at the Tiger 40 and with the help of a
non-existent late hit call Anson scored to take the lead. Cade Manuel pressured the QB on the PAT and the pass fell short. The Cats commenced to answer this threat and drove the ball right back down to the Tiger 18–yard line before a bad exchange between the snapper and the QB gave the ball back to Anson. Both teams offensive drives stalled and Anson got the ball back again. Kyle Sellers then got in the backfield and disrupted the option hand off which led to a fumble that the Bearcat’s Ross Jones fell on and the Cats were back in business. The offense again drove the ball into the end zone for the game winner but a holding call pushed them back out. The Cats had given about all they could give for that score and with them being down to 12 men by this time many had played the entire game. The ball went over on downs and the defense again stopped the Tigers and got the ball back but time ran out on the Cats.

The Bearcats have the last of their three home games this season when they take on Coahoma Thursday. At press time the roster still looks slim but the spirit of the Ironmen lives!

8th Grade Bearcats vs C-City

Hawley Bearcats 8th grade played a very good Colorado City team on Thursday. This was a very hard fought game by both teams. Hawley scored first on a 7 yard touchdown pass from Tanner Thompson to Kyle Compton. The extra point was no good. Colorado City answered with a score and a two point conversion. Daniel Brewer then returned the kick off ninety-five yards for Hawley's next score, the extra point was no good. C. City came back with a long pass for a touchdown, the two point conversion was good. Daniel Brewer then scored on a eight yard run, and agin the 2 point conversion was no good making the half time score Colorado City 22 Hawley 19. Hawley came out strong in the second half: scoring on a twentysix yard touchdown run by Tanner Thompson and the two point conversion by Kaleb Faulks was good. Daniel Brewer then scored on a 31 yard on a thirtyone yard touchdown run, the extra point was no good. C. City scored on a 75 yard touchdown with 23 seconds left in the game. On side kick was unsuccessful and Hawley was able to run out the clock and take home the Victory with a final score of 33 - 30. Even though the defense gave up 30 points it was a good showing by the defense, going against such a strong offense like Colorado City. Great job and good luck next week.

Colorado City proves too much for Hawley

By Robert Adkins

The Colorado City Wolves hosted the Hawley Bearcats Friday night in C-City. The Bearcats were confident they could make a strong showing against the favored Wolves and the defense started out that way. The Bearcat offense came up a little short unable to put together a scoring drive until the 3rd quarter with the PAT being blocked and covered by the Bearcats. The Wolves defeated Hawley with the score of 33-6.

The complete stats were not available at the time of this writing but this much was available.

The Bearcats will host the Anson Tigers Friday night at Forrest Field to continue District 4-2A play. So make plans to attend and show your support for the Bearcats as they battle the cross-county rivals from Anson. Go Bearcats!

HAWLEY JV BEATS CC

Once again the Hawley JV Bearcats game resembled that of Sundays Dallas game. Turnovers on the first two drives left Cats fans wondering when we were going to start playing ball. Well it didn't take long before they got started and the Colorado City couldn't get them stopped as they rolled over the Wolves 34 to 6 in Hawley Thursday night.
It started pretty shaky when the Cats fumbled on their very first play from scrimmage and gave the ball to C-City deep in Bearcat territory after the defense forced a 3 and out for the Wolves. The defense stepped up again with a beautifully defended long ball by Matt Penny, a big sack by the Bearcat line, and polished it off with a Kyle Sellers’ interception. The Cats then drove the ball from their own 30 to C-City's 36 before we fumbled again. But we saw that the running game was working and the defense playing great so we feared not. The defense forced a punt and Robert Hall got though to block it and Seth Manly fell on it setting the Cats up in great field position. Several runs later Manly goes over from the 2 and for the TD and Sellers adds the PAT. The next play on offense from the Cats 29-yard line saw QB Josh Harris roll right, give ground to get the corner, back left across the whole field of play to be forced out at the C-City 20. The crowd went wild. Then the offense gave the ball up on downs and there was lamenting in the stands. But never fear, Rodney Rud is here! On a sweet little play C-City completed a swing pass and Rodney committed larceny on that poor Wolf and came up with his football.
Cat offense back in business. Rud was also in on the payoff from this turnover when Harris threw to Penny who had the ball bounce off him and into the waiting hands off Rud standing in the end zone. The PAT looked like a broken play and failed. The defense forced another 3 and out and on the Cat's next drive the run was not working as well as we liked. Three passes to LJ Greenway, Manly and Penny and the Cat's pushed in with a QB sneak with less than a minute to play in the half. The PAT rush again failed. The Wolves got their first first down of the game on the last play of the first half. Score Hawley 20 C-City 0.
Second drive for the Cats in the second half was vintage Bearcat ball: Grinding it out on the ground and ending in two Robert "I will not be denied" Hall runs that carried Wolves down the field and into the end zone. The PAT rush again failed. The Cat defense bent a little on the next C-City drive and let them down to the Cat 10-yard line. But once again Rud saved the day with an end zone interception, which he ran out to the two-yard line. The Cats couldn't get going and had to punt. The Wolves then got loose on a long run and were denied the end zone by a TD saving tackle by safety Manly. But not for long as two plays later they hit the slant route for their only score. It is a long way back to Colorado City without a touchdown. The PAT failed. The Wolves tried an onside kick but the Cats made a very smart play when it didn't go ten yards and stayed away from it. Well we couldn't let a score go unanswered so the Cats ran the ball down to the 4 before Zane Masavage burst over for the score. LJ Greenway tacked on the PAT and that about wrapped it up. Cats 34 Wolves 6.
Due to technical difficulties (Can't find the camera remote) there are no stats for this game. Next week we travel to Anson to meet up with the Tigers at 7:30. I will try to get the stats for both games in that article. Gas ain't cheap but Anson ain't that far. COME SEE US

Hawley Defeats Stamford in District Opener

By Robert Adkins

The Hawley Bearcats defeated the Stamford Bulldogs Friday night at Forrest Field to start district play for the 2 teams. There was a good crowd for the home team as it was Hawley’s homecoming.

The game started with the Bulldogs receiving the opening kickoff and starting their drive from the 11-yard line. The Bearcat defense did an excellent job and forced the Bulldogs to punt. Hawley had a misque on the reception that gave Stamford the ball back for a 1st down. The Bearcat defense didn’t falter, and a few plays later intercepted the ball giving the Bearcats excellent field position. The Bearcats scored later on a 1-yard run by Josh Stevens. The PAT was no good. Stamford received the kick and started their drive from the 16-yard line. A few plays later the Bearcats intercepted the ball to give Hawley good field position deep in Bulldog territory. Hawley turned it into a touchdown on a 1-yard run by Seth Lockwood. The 2 point conversion was no good overthrowing Jeremy Gwinn in the corner of the endzone. The score after 8 minutes of play was Hawley – 12, Stamford – 0.

The Bulldogs started their drive on the 21-yard line, but was forced to punt after an excellent stance by the Bearcat defense. Hawley started their drive on their own 42-yard line. With good runs from Seth Keith, Kyle Sloan, and Josh Stevens, the Bearcats advanced the ball 57 yards to turn the ball over, ending the Bearcat drive. Stamford took the turnover and drove the length of the field and scored on a 25-yard pass. The PAT was good.

Hawley received the kick and started their next drive from their 30-yard line. The Bearcats continued their ground assault with solid advances from Stevens, Keith, and Sloan, but the drive was cut short by an intercepted pass from Kody Sims to intended receiver Wes Lambert. The Bulldogs hardly got their offense settled in when Chad Taillon, DT for the Bearcats made a one arm grab to snatch an interception from the Bulldogs to get the Bearcats fired up for their drive. But no sooner had the Bearcats started the drive, when a fumble that was recovered by Hawley was given possession to Stamford by the Zebra Crew. It looked like the Bulldogs were on a scoring drive when once again a ray of hope shined Hawley’s way when Casey Wilkerson came up with an interception on a deflected pass. But the Bearcats were unable to keep the drive alive and turned the ball over on downs. The Bearcat defense was able to hold the Bulldogs and forced them to punt, Hawley was unable to put together a drive and was forced to punt the ball away. The remainder of the half was scoreless. With the half ending the score was Hawley – 12, Stamford – 7.

The second half was mainly Stamford. The Bulldogs added 13 points to their tally while the Bearcats were plagued by penalties. Hawley started their final drive from their own 21-yard line and went 79 yards to score on a 1-yard run by Josh Stevens. The 2 point conversion was good on a completed pass from Kody Sims to wide open Wes Lambert in the corner of the endzone to tie the game at 20 with 28 seconds left in the game. This sent the game into overtime.

Stamford got first chance to put together a score in the OT period but a massive hit on the QB by Dustin Polk caused a fumble and the Bearcats recovered. Three plays later Josh Stevens finds the endzone on a 20-yard run around the left end to give the Bearcats a 26 to 20 lead over the Bulldogs. The PAT was no good. The final score was Hawley – 26, Stamford – 20. The individual stats were as follows:

JV Bearcats Slosh to Victory

It was a dark and stormy night. Though the night came an unstoppable Hawley running game and a stifling Bearcat defense that brought light and warmth to the soggy Bearcat fans and a mark in the win column with a 42 –0 triumph over Stamford Thursday night. The balanced running of Seth Manly, Robert Hall, Kyle Sellers, and Josh Harris piled up 293 yards on 25 carries for an 11.7 yard average carry. Cory Baldock led the defense by playing like a wild man making 5.5 tackles, two for losses. Evidence that the defense played well is the fact that the secondary only made two tackles all night.

The defense started the fireworks when on Stamford’s second play from scrimmage after the opening kick off Baldock forced a fumble that Cade Manuel promptly fell on. Four plays later Manly got loose for a 25-yard TD. Matt Penny added the PAT on a run up the middle. Penny then slid on the free football on the ensuing kickoff to put the Cats right back on offense. The payoff came when Penny scored from 8 yards out several plays later. The PAT was run in by, you guessed it, Penny.

Stanford had three plays on offense before Hall recovered a Bulldog fumble and the Cat offense was back in business. Manly for 18 yards, Sellers for 17 yards, Sellers in for the 3-yard TD. The PAT was backed up by a 15-yard penalty then failed to convert. The first quarter ended Hawley 22 Stamford 0.

Next time down the field Sellers had a 16-yard run end after a superman dive to the one-yard line. Next play Sellers went over from the one for another Bearcat score. The PAT snap got past the QB and a surprised Manly picked it up and made the best of it but couldn’t make the goal line. The rest of the second quarter was highlighted by the only pass attempt of the night by the Bearcats and a play in which Baldock pressured the QB then made the tackle on the receiver 7 yards down the field. GREAT HUSTLE!!!

The second half went rather quickly and you didn’t hear any complaints from anyone. The rain had never let up, it was cold, and it was 28-0 so the clock ran freely. The highlights were a great Jon Hardesty block on a Sellers 17-yard run, a misdirection play that let Hall walk in from 11 yards out with Hall getting the PAT, another onside kick recovery and a Harris 55 yard TD run on the bootleg.

The Bearcats have finally got a home game against Colorado next Thursday. The game will start at 6:00 p.m. Come watch all the Bearcat action .
