JV Bearcats Out-manned by Tigers

The Hawley JV Bearcats took the field Thursday night with 13 men and out-gained the Tigers in total offense 291 to 165 and first downs 14 to 8; but two touchdowns called back, two turnovers and a down box malfunction combined to do the Bearcats in with a 12 to 10 loss in Anson Thursday night.

It was obvious from the beginning it was going to be a defensive struggle with both teams playing good defense. The Bearcats running game was on as usual and they marched down the field on their second drive and put it in the end zone with an 11-yard run by Zane Masavage. The same play scored the PAT and the Cats led 8-0. The Cats then perpetrated a perfect on-side kick recovered by Matt Penny and went right back to work. The rest of the first half was very defensive, but late in the second quarter the Tigers drove to the Bearcat 14-yard line before being stopped. The Cats took over and had an illegal formation penalty on the first play. Repeated first down and went on. After second down everyone proceeded to third down with the exception of the down box operator. This led the Bearcats running the ball on fourth and eight thinking it was third and eight. Anson got in the end zone from the Cat 17-yard line seconds before the half ended. The Cats denied the PAT and the halftime score was Hawley 8 Anson 6.

The Cats’ kickoff for the second half went out of bounds at the Tiger 40 and with the help of a
non-existent late hit call Anson scored to take the lead. Cade Manuel pressured the QB on the PAT and the pass fell short. The Cats commenced to answer this threat and drove the ball right back down to the Tiger 18–yard line before a bad exchange between the snapper and the QB gave the ball back to Anson. Both teams offensive drives stalled and Anson got the ball back again. Kyle Sellers then got in the backfield and disrupted the option hand off which led to a fumble that the Bearcat’s Ross Jones fell on and the Cats were back in business. The offense again drove the ball into the end zone for the game winner but a holding call pushed them back out. The Cats had given about all they could give for that score and with them being down to 12 men by this time many had played the entire game. The ball went over on downs and the defense again stopped the Tigers and got the ball back but time ran out on the Cats.

The Bearcats have the last of their three home games this season when they take on Coahoma Thursday. At press time the roster still looks slim but the spirit of the Ironmen lives!
