JV BEARCATS COLLAR BULLDOGS
The defenses came to play here in Hawley Thursday night and it was reflected in the 14 to 6 score. The Hawley JV offense swung the scales their way with a good performance against a blitzing Coahoma defense to come out on top. It was a close game but Hawley seemed to be in control all night
It all started good with the Cats taking their first possession right down the field and into the end zone with a 1-yard TD run by LJ Greenway with 4:49 left in the first quarter. The extra points run failed. The defense forced a three and out and the Cats went to work again. LJ Greenway got loose again with a 37-yard romp before Josh Harris hit Kyle Sellers with a 23-yard pass. But then the Cats bogged down and gave up the ball on downs on the last play of the first quarter.
The defense got their only blemish of the evening on the next drive as Coahoma scored but then also failed on their PAT. Both defenses then took turns sacking the other’s quarterback and put the Bulldogs back on offense but not for long. Coahoma ran the option to the right but the pitch got to the pitch man about the same time Josh Harris did and he somehow talked him into pitching it again, right to Seth Manly and the Cats were back in business. The Bearcats then did a three and out of their own but when the Bulldogs got the ball back Nathan Sharp and Cade Manuel sandwiched the QB and forced a fumble that Sellers scooped up. The Cats had the ball at the Bulldogs 14-yard line but couldn’t make it to pay dirt with the second half ending on the unsuccessful fourth down play.
Manly picked off a Bulldog pass on the first possession of the second half. But then after nice 15-yard run by Sharp we fumbled it right back. It only seemed fair. The charity continued with Coahoma fumbling it back to Dusty Twombly several plays later. Next thing you know it’s fourth and four and we began to wonder if anybody was ever going to score. Manly picked up twenty yards and several plays later Matt Penny went up the middle for the game winner and LJ Greenway tacked on the extra points with a 3-yard run. Sharp then fell on the succeeding kick off and the Cats were back on offense. But neither team could get very offensive in the fourth quarter with neither team chalking up a first down until Hawley got the last one with Greenway icing the game on a 15-yard run allowing the Cats to run out the clock.
The Cats will take the long road trip to Stanton next Thursday to take on the Buffaloes. Get your car pools together now and come support the IRONMEN.
